Beginning Monday, Aug. 15, through Friday, Aug. 19, San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 624 leaders will be in Las Vegas at the 53rd annual International Association of Fire Fighters convention.
We are excited that our brothers and sisters will be represented at this convention, but also that our international brotherhood and leadership will be working to address major issues facing firefighters.
Setting the tone for the week, IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger spoke about the need to be more than a powerful union, showing unity and solidarity.
On Monday, IAFF leadership announced the opening of the new IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health, Treatment, and Recovery. The center, in partnership with Advanced Recovery Systems, will focus on providing a place to get help and peer counseling for members facing PTSD and other issues.
“Because we know our members are more likely and inclined to talk with one of our own,” said Schaitberger.
The center will also continue research, training, and protocol development when dealing with mental health.
“Bottom line, when it comes to our member’s health and safety, I can make you this promise: That this IAFF will continue to be on the front lines caring for them and protecting them every step of the way and in every way we can,” said Schaitberger.
